Good!
I’ve been thinking about the word “good” lately. When someone asks me how I’m doing I usually say “good”. Sometimes I hit them with a “groovy”. At times, I feel that it sounds flat and I should be more upbeat, more “Great!” “Awesome!” But “good” usually fits.
In Genesis after each thing God created He said “It is good.” Verse 31 says: “God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning-the sixth day.”
That’s been rolling over and over in my head. God looked at me and said good. I’m good. I don’t have to add pressure to be awesome by performing or not messing up. Because, let’s be honest, performing is exhausting and I’m always messing up. The pressure to always be amazing can make me feel inadequate.
A day can be great. A memory we make can be amazing. Very rarely, probably more like never, would I see myself as that. Why can’t we be ok with good. God says we are good.
And I am good with who I am and my life.
I have worked really hard to not compete against others. I’m good with what has put in my hand to do.
I have worked really hard being content with what I have. I’m good with all that He has provided for me.
I have worked really hard to not be jealous or offended when I’m not included. I’m good being seen and validated by my Abba.
You get the picture.
I am able to rest in “good” because I have learned that I can trust God because He is good. Everything He does flows from His goodness and His heart is for me. He fights for me.
As we just celebrated Thanksgiving and preparing for Christmas, let’s remind ourselves of God’s goodness.
James 1:17 “Whatever is good and perfect is a gift coming down to us from God our Father, who created all the lights in the heavens. He never changes or casts a shifting shadow. “
Psalm 119:68 “You are good and do only good; teach me your decrees.”
Psalm 145:9 “The LORD is good to everyone. He showers compassion on all his creation.”
Psalm 107:8-9 “Let them give thanks to the LORD for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for mankind, for he satisfies the thirsty and fills the hungry with good things.”
Psalm 103:13-14 “The LORD is like a father to his children, tender and compassionate to those who fear him. For he knows how weak we are; he remembers we are only dust.”
Psalm 27:13 “Yet I am confident I will see the LORD’s goodness while I am in the land of the living.”
You can add your own to my short list.
Sometime today look in the mirror and say I’m good.
It’s not because of anything we have done or will do, but because God said so.
It’s not because we have the perfect body or job or house or car, but because God said so.
Let’s thank God for all He has given us and for His faithfulness in our lives.
Let’s rest in knowing He is good and we can trust Him.
Let’s lay aside striving to be perfect, amazing or any adjective that causes us anxiety and feelings of failure for not measuring up.
So, child of a good, good God - have a good day!
All My Love ~
