Our Refuge

As I sit here to write, two of my sweetest friends are battling Covid in the hospital. Hundreds are hiding in caves, but ready to die for their faith in Jesus. My nephew is helping with the refugees in Qatar. In one night a country lost everything and the women are once again in hiding. Hundreds have no water or power. Plus a million other things that the people I love are walking through. My heart and mind are overwhelmed by all that is happening. It is heavy. Where do I go?

“Find rest , O my soul, in God alone;
my hope comes from Him.
He alone is my rock and my salvation;
He is my fortress, I will not be shaken.
My salvation and my honor depend on God;
He is my mighty rock, my refuge.
Trust in Him at all times, O people;
pour your hearts out to Him,
for God is our refuge. Selah”
Psalm 62:5-8

Take a deep breath and read that again.

At the time David wrote this Psalm he was dealing with enemies that not only wanted his kingdom, but his life. This Psalm is not a prayer or a praise, but a statement to himself and then us, on who to trust and who not to trust. This section, I think, deals with why we can wait on God. Also, through all these verses God here is ‘Elohim’ which is plural, meaning we have Father, Son and Holy Spirit caring for us, protecting us, being our shelter.

Waiting requires trusting. It can show a posture of confidence, not frantic rushing and pacing.

“Find rest , O my soul, in God alone; my hope comes from Him.”
When our world is topsy-turvy and we feel it coming from all sides, we can find rest! We can find rest for our souls: our passions, desires, emotions, what makes us - us. We find that rest in God, not in any other voices and places we listen to or go to. Our hope: our expectation, our longing comes only from God!

“He alone is my rock and my salvation; He is my fortress, I will not be shaken.”
God alone is strong, steady and unmoveable. He alone is our deliverance and help. David is speaking with absolute confidence that God will defend him. God is his fortress, God is a ‘stronghold that is unassailable.’ David knows that he can be secure and stand strong with God guarding him.
”The LORD is a refuge for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble.” Psalm 9:9

“My salvation and my honor depend on God; He is my mighty rock, my refuge.”
Why can we wait for God to bring our deliverance, our help? Why can we trust God with our souls and all He has given us? David shares these thoughts:

“I cry out to God Most High, to God, who fulfills His purpose for me.” Psalm 57:2
”But the LORD has become my fortress, and my God the rock in whom I take refuge.” Psalm 94:2

”Trust in Him at all times, O people; pour your hearts out to Him, for God is our refuge.”
We can rely on God at ALL times. We can come to God with everything we are concerned about. We pour our hearts out to who we trust and David is telling us we can trust God with all that we are concerned about.

Through the years: my mom dying unexpectedly, our girls in NICU as newborns, the hundreds of times I cried out for God to be there with us in the middle of life stuff, my MS and Lupus diagnoses and finding a new normal, all of the questions, all of the doubts, the yelling and crying moments. All of it.

God has been there. He gets me, just like He gets you. He created and formed us, after all. Let me show you what I mean, I wrote this in my journal the other day. It reads chaotic, no judging!
”Thank You Abba for always being there for me. For being strong and steady; unmoveable! I know You know what I know - what I carry - what I hope for - what I lay at Your feet - what I cry for. You know the cry of my heart. I WILL REST IN YOU, GOD!!”

Sometimes we have the words and sometimes all we have are the feelings. Just tell Him. He’s listening. He sees you. He loves you. He is your refuge!

Where in our life do we need God to be strong, steady, a refuge and unmoveable?
If you need to, go back and reread the Scripture. You are loved!

Have an amazing day!
