The Kill (part 3)

A ‘Kill’ in volleyball is when an attack (the final offensive step in sending the ball back over the net) results in an immediate point. For the ‘Kill’ we are going to be focusing on how we can practically defeat the enemy every day.

For a little context: David was basically an outlaw running from King Saul and he took refuge with the Philistines. He and his men were ready to fight against Saul and Israel, but most of the Philistine army didn’t trust them. You know, cause they were afraid they would turn on them. Anyway, David and his men were asked to leave, so they traveled 3 days to Ziglag, where their families were. They arrived seeing it burnt to the ground and everything was taken: young, old, wives and children. David and his men wept until they had nothing left. Everything God had given him was taken away.

I know I’ve been there, have you had a moment like that?

A moment when there is such a sense of disappoint, hurt, betrayal, loss when you have nothing left to stand, let alone fight.

When we are trying our best to serve God, serve our families, serve our community and church. Working at being obedient to what God is asking. Doing all the things. We can be attacked by our thoughts or a careless, hurtful action while trying to “Block” the shots of the enemy. The weight of everything is on us and we drop to our knees. The enemy sees our weakened state and “Sets-Up” his shot, his blockers are poised and ready. What do we do?

“David was greatly distressed because the men were talking of stoning him; each one was bitter in spirit because of his sons and daughters.
But David found strength in the LORD his God.” 1 Samuel 30:6
(italics mine)

David not only lost everything, but was looking at immediate death and he found his ‘strength’, what he needed ‘to stand firm; be encouraged, supported; become powerful’ and fight again in HIS God.

I love how David knew God in such a personal and relational way. He knew he could go to God and God would be there for him, standing with him, giving him what he needed to take the next step: to chase down the Amalekites, defeat them and get everyone back.

David was able to stand and direct his men to victory because he knew where his strength came from. He didn’t allow the circumstances around him to rob him of all that he knew to be true. He was able to push through and deliver his ‘Kill’ shot.

I mean literally, he killed the Amalekites.

While we do not have wage war physically, we are fighting a war mentally, emotionally, spiritually. We need to know, really - really - really know our God. In that moment what is our speech? Are we taming our tongue? Where is our hope? Are we finding strength in our community? (remember the huddle?)

“By His divine power, God has given us everything we need for a godly life. We have received all of this by coming to know Him, the One who called us to Himself by His marvelous glory and excellence.”
~ 2 Peter 1:3

Repeat after me: “I have everything I need because of the power of God that lives in me!”

We can defeat the enemy in our lives by going to God for our strength.
May you walk in that truth today and find our strength in your God!
Have an amazing day!
