“Who Do You Say I am?”

I was reading John 9 the other day and as I journaling I was struck by verse 8: “His neighbors and those who had formerly seen him begging asked, ‘Isn’t this the same man who used to sit and beg.’”

I know it’s not that profound of a verse. All we know about this guy is that he had been blind since birth and Jesus said that his healing was to give God glory.

“…but this happened so that the work of God might be displayed in his life.” John 9:3b

Right after his healing, people all around him were questioning if it was really him or not. He had to convince them that he was the same guy they had been blind and was begging. That set off a chain of events:
He told his story about how Jesus healed him.
They took him to the Pharisees and he told them his story of how Jesus healed him.
Then the Pharisees called him back for another round of questions and things became a little ugly.

When God moves in our lives and we look and act different than what people have always known ~ we have a great moment to declare what Jesus has done for us and bring Him glory!

Jesus asked His disciples this question after they had been with Him for some time and seen many miracles. Did they agree with the crowds and just see Him as a Healer or Prophet? The nice guy kids liked to hang out with? Or maybe the guy that ruffled the feathers of the religious leaders? Peter answered: “You are the Messiah.” Then Jesus said: “Blessed are you…for this was not revealed to you by man, but by my Father in Heaven.” (v.17)

We need the wisdom and revelation from Heaven to understand Who Jesus really is.

As we see here some people may not be open to hear about Jesus and His work in our lives. We may get push back or lose some relationships. And as hard as that is, we see Jesus meeting him in that moment. We are never alone!

“Jesus heard that they had thrown him out, and when He found him, He said, “Do you believe in the Son of Man?’” verse 35 (italics mine)

I think that’s such an interesting question because in John 9:17 the man told the Pharisees that Jesus is a prophet.

Jesus gives this man the opportunity to really know who He is. Not just as Healer or Prophet, but as the Messiah. The word believe means to have faith in, entrust. Whether your version says “Son of Man” or “Son of God” both mean that Jesus is God’s Son and therefore the Messiah.

Jesus doesn’t want us to stop at the front door and be content hanging out the entryway of all He has for us. He wants us to come into the kitchen, sit down and get to know all of Him and receive all He has for us.

As we are preparing for Easter, what a wonderful question! Do we believe in~ trust ~ have faith in ~ Jesus, the Son of God or He is limited to one or two titles? He is our Messiah?

As I finished journaling, I wrote: “Let me always point people back to You! Let me give You all the Glory!”

Let our lives be a light to others, pointing them to who Jesus is and all He has done and is doing! Amen!
