Worship

This past Sunday Dean and I did Lobby Time for Church. We always have fun and it’s completely nerve-wracking at the same time. Our topic was worship and I mentioned the first time worship is mentioned in the Bible is in Genesis 22:5 when Abraham said: “He said to his servants, ‘Stay here with the donkey while I and the boy go over there. We will worship then we will come back to you.”

I am struck my Abraham’s statement. It doesn’t show any turmoil or angst, it doesn’t hint at distrust or uncertainty. WE will go and WE will come back.

The word worship is a verb meaning to bow down, and it doesn’t look like what we see David doing or what we see in our churches today. There is no band, no singing, just obedience.

It was an active yielding to and bowing down to the Holy God, the King of Kings. It had more to do with the posture and sacrifice in Abraham’s heart than an outward show.

The book “Hinds Feet on High Places” comes to mind, specifically the part when Much Afraid needs to place herself on the altar. There is a yielding there, a trust that is needed. The same goes for Isaac, he willing went on the altar. Isaac was not a young child, he took a 3 day journey with his 100+ year old dad and he carried the wood up the mountain. He could have fought his dad if he wanted to, but he didn’t.

Remember God called Abraham His friend. Abraham must have instilled in Isaac the same hope, the same yielding to God. What a great reminder how important our roles are as parents and grandparents.

The very first place of worship was about the posture of heart and obedience. We are worshipping when we actively take part in laying the treasure of our hearts down before God.

How was Abraham able to have that confidence in God? I think He knew God was good. He knew God gave him Isaac and a promise, and God will figure the rest out.

God

Psalm 34:8 “ Taste and see that the LORD is good; blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him.”

Here is the same verse with the definitions: “Perceive and see that the God of Israel is pleasant, agreeable and good; happy, blessed is the man who seeks refuge in Him!”

If we can come to agreement with God that He is good, then we can totally and completely trust Him with our hearts, our dreams, our families, our promises and future. That is what Abraham did as he bowed before God and worshipped.

What a challenge and invitation we have!!

What spoke most to you today? Was it about the posture of our hearts or our obedience? Maybe it was that God is good or that we can take refuge in Him. Or maybe that we need to lay ourselves on the altar. Take a moment to sit with that and let God speak to you.
