Let There Be Light
I’d like to share something that I studied in my time with God and it’s been a special word for me. I hope you are as encouraged as I am.
I was reading John 1:1-5:
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God.
He was with God in the beginning.
Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made.
In him was life, and that life was the light of men.
The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it.” (italics mine)
Which reminded me of Genesis 1:1-4:
“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the deep,
and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.
And God said, ‘Let there be light, and there was light.
God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness.”
~ John tells us that Jesus was with God at the beginning of everything and Jesus brings us life and light. His light shines in the darkness of this world and our lives.
~ God created light to break up the darkness.
Here’s where it gets really good! I get so excited!
Genesis tells us the earth was formless and void, which basically means there was chaos, desolation, meaningless; it was unstructured and empty.
Geesh! Doesn’t that sound like life right now?
And deep darkness covered everything. It’s a darkness similar to if you were in a mine. It could also mean obscurity, a secret place, mourning, distress, dread, sin.
I could claim a few of those to describe parts of my life. How about you?
THEN the Spirit of God hovers! It’s a gentle flutter or movement, cherished, to be relaxed.
God is not in a rush or being demanding.
Whatever darkness we are experiencing, whether mourning a loss or diagnosis or dealing with a sin or we are in a time of aloneness where we feel overlooked or forgotten, God is hovering over us.
God is gently moving in our lives.
God understands our darkness and has provided us the Light we need to navigate out of it with the Life of Jesus.
Jesus shined His Light into my life and changed the landscape of my world.
“The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us.
We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came the Father,
full of grace and truth.” (italics mine)
~ John 1:14
Jesus came to live with us to show us the heart and glory of God. Jesus is full of grace and truth. Jesus is gentle, just like the Spirit hovering. Jesus speaks life over us. Jesus meets us in the formless, empty, chaotic, covered in darkness parts of our lives. Jesus wants to change us, to heal us and to have us walk with Him in purpose and freedom.
I was in the MRI tube for about an hour and a half this morning and I tried to pray but that noise is so loud and distracting. Anyway, I was praying off and on or just saying “Jesus” and I felt that hovering, that closeness. It was a sweet time with Him, even in the midst of all that racket.
God desires to be close to us in darkness. He wants to hover and move in our lives. His love for us motivates everything He does. I am not alone. You are not alone.
I pray that you know how much you are loved and allow the hovering of the Holy Spirit to bring life and light into your darkness.
All My Love ~
